Christmas Carol just a different name for a song, and carols are simply songs that are about Christmas. Christmas hymns, a hymn can be a carol, but a carol is not necessarily a hymn if it doesn't specifically cover the birth or life of Christ.Song is the set of all lyric-based music.
Carol is a subset of "Song", meant to be jovial, and sung in a group - anything from Deck the Halls to Silent Night. Christmas Carol is traditionally sung on Christmas itself or during the surrounding holiday season. Christmas carols may be regarded as a subset of the broader category of Christmas music.
Hymn is another subset of "Song", which overlaps "Carol". Since we're speaking of odes and praises, I see Silent Night as a Hymn.
Christmas Caroling
The idea of Christmas caroling brings to mind jolly bands of churchgoers, dressed in shawls and top hats, going door-to-door, also known
Caroling. Just as poor people in big cities today can be found on corners singing for money, in centuries past beggars would sing carols for food or money. In the 1500's this public singing was banned in England by Oliver Cromwell (a real Grinch!!!), which lead to people going door to door and singing carols in private.
